What are Aromatherapy Oils and Why do we use them?
Aromatherapy has it’s roots in the most ancient and natural forms of medicine. It is the use of volatile plant oils known as essential oils for the treatment or prevention of disease. It is a form of true holistic therapy designed to treat the whole person and not just the symptom or disease by assisting the body’s natural ability to balance, heal and maintain itself.
“The term “essential oil” is a contraction of the original “quintessential oil.” This stems from the Aristotelian idea that matter is composed of four elements, namely, fire, air, earth, and water. The fifth element, or quintessence, was then considered to be spirit or life force. Distillation and evaporation were thought to be processes of removing the spirit from the plant and this is also reflected in our language since the term “spirits” is used to describe distilled alcoholic beverages such as brandy, whiskey, and eau de vie. The last of these again shows reference to the concept of removing the life force from the plant. Nowadays, of course, we know that, far from being spirit, essential oils are physical in nature and composed of complex mixtures of chemicals.” (naha.org)
These “essential oils” can be found in blossom, fruit, roots, leaves, the stem, wood, bark the tree roots and resin. They are extracted from the plant by distillation, thus separating the oil from the plant’s natural water solution. These oils are constantly changing their chemical composition to adapt to the plant’s internal and external environment, therefore the amount of oil available to extract differs from plant to plant. Each essential oil is made up of between 50-100 naturally recurring oils.
