With the warm weather approaching, a change to your usual makeup, fragrance and beauty product choices is probably on the cards anyway, so what better time to spring-clean your beauty routine…
Have you ever had a look at the ingredients list on your favorite lotions and potions, only to find yourself a little alarmed to find that they are often made up of things that we can’t pronounce, let alone know what they are? Whilst it would be nice to look away and imagine that these mystery ingredients in our beauty routines are just complex names for something innocent, the truth is often far more sinister and if you are prone to breakouts or dry, sensitive skin, this could quite possibly be the cause.
Did you know, that just a standard moisturizer can contain up to 20 chemical and plastic based, unnatural ingredients that have been linked to hormonal disruptions? Or that your perfume may be un-regulated and contain the same chemicals found in cigarette smoke? It’s a scary thought, but don’t worry! This does not have to be the price we pay for great beauty products.

6 tbsp (solid) coconut oil
100g baking soda
Up to 10 drops orange oil
Making your own aluminum free, non-toxic deodorant to include in your daily beauty routine is so easy! We have chosen a recipe for your using orange oil, as this is not only a gorgeous, unisex scent but is also de-odorizing in nature. If this fragrance isn’t for you, there are plenty of other de-odorizing essential oils that you might want to try. Coconut oil is also de-odorizing due to it’s anti-bacterial properties and doubles up as a moisturizer for smooth, soft underarms!
Mix all the ingredients up well until well blended into a paste and store in a sealed glass jar to keep it fresh. To apply, simply smear on with clean fingers.

There are so many fantastic moisturizers found in nature that it can be hard to choose which to go for; really what it comes down to is what suits your skin best, providing you with the moisture you need without being too heavy, so it may take some trial and error. Here’s a lovely one for you to try, found on Live Simply:
• ½ cup (4oz) shea butter
• 2 TB skin-nourishing oil, such as: jojoba, avocado, apricot, or sweet almond oil. This can even be coconut oil.
• 15 drops drops lavender essential oil
• 10 drops rosemary essential oil
• 5-7 drops carrot seed oil
• 3-5 drops tea tree essential oil
1. In a saucepan, over medium-low heat, melt the shea butter. Add in the nourishing skin oil. Turn off the heat.
2. Pour into a bowl (I use my Kitchen-Aid bowl). Place in the freezer and allow to cool and return to a solid (not hard) form. This takes about 15-20 minutes. Don’t freeze the mixture.
3. Once “solid”-looking remove from the freezer. Add in the essential oils and carrot seed oil. Using the whisk attachment on your mixer, whip the mixture until soft and looks like buttery whip cream. This takes just a minute or two. Don’t over-whip. Scoop into a jar and store at room temp. Apply to both body and face as desired.

150g baking soda
4 tsp ground sea salt
1-2 tsp of peppermint extract/essential oil
This homemade toothpaste is wonderfully refreshing and leaves your mouth feeling clean and minty fresh! Combine all the ingredients and store in a small, clean jar (a herb pot is ideal). When you’re ready to use, just coat your toothpaste, add a little water as you normally would with your regular beauty regime and brush away!
Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it has a very porous surface (meaning whatever you put ON it is going to go IN) so having natural makeup as part of your beauty routine is just as important as everything else.
Studies have shown that most mainstream blushers contain approximately 16 toxic chemicals, foundation has 24, eye-shadow has 26 and lipstick has a whopping 33 possibly harmful ingredients.
