Recipes for cleansing, clarifying and lightening

Great hair starts with great ingredients – that’s what we believe here at Tabitha James Kraan. If you’ve read our ‘Good Enough To Eat!’ blog then you’ll know all about how we like to keep our hair care 100% natural, using many hair health-boosting ingredients that you might well be able to find hidden away in your kitchen. If you’re ever low on your Tabitha James Kraan cleanser or 4-in-1 conditioner, there are some fantastic home, hair treatments that you can whip up in no time at all, which provide really effective moisturization of the hair follicles and scalp as well as a high gloss finish – they may not be glamorous, but they definitely do a wonderful job!

We’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite home ingredients that you can use as nourishing hair masks, toners and even hair lighteners to give you that healthy, sun kissed look for the warmer months ahead.

A popular choice for those of you with dry, damaged hair in need of deep moisturization, this tasty lunchtime snack is nature’s hair mask. Packed full with conditioning fatty acids and proteins as well as all the key vitamins and minerals for promoting hair growth (A,D, E and B6 as well as magnesium, folic acid, amino acids, copper and iron), Avocado is the perfect natural remedy for hair in need of a little TLC and it’s really easy to prepare for application:

Take one ripe, peeled avocado and mash into a thick paste.

Add 1 tablespoon of olive or coconut oil

If you fancy an even higher protein dose (recommended for intense restoration) add a free-range egg and/or a tablespoon of organic yoghurt.

Mix together well to blend all the ingredients

Apply generously coating all of your hair, seal in a shower cap or plastic bag secured around your hair and leave to sit for a minimum of 20 minutes

Use if you suffer from frizzy hair or a dry scalp for smooth, manageable hair and lovely soothing benefits.

Apple Cider Vinegar

OK, I’ll be honest with you – this doesn’t smell so great, but you would be surprised how mild the vinegar scent is once you’ve rinsed it off and the pros WELL out-weigh the cons. Apple Cider Vinegar (or ACV as it shall now be known!) is one of those miracle cure-alls that is just all round amazing for you inside and out. When applied to hair, this stinky savior acts as a cleanser, conditioner, clarifying treatment AND PH balancer all in one. It also treats hair loss by stimulating growth and de-tangles knotty hair – it’s hard not to be impressed. Here’s how to use it:

Mix 1 part ACV with 1 part filtered water

Shampoo hair if you like or just use the ACV on it’s own! Lightly towel-dry hair and apply the treatment, thoroughly dousing your hair and scalp

Rinse right away or leave for a minute or two for extra potency

Use for mirror shine and to heal a dry, itchy scalp.

Chamomile /tea

Well known for it’s sleep-inducing properties, Chamomile tea is also a very effective and gentle natural hair lightener and is a considerably better (albeit less drastic) option than bleaching with regards to hair health. Perfect for the summer months, as heading out into the sun for a couple of hours after applying can lead to quite dramatic effects and also for those with sensitive scalps, as this is not only gentle on your locks, but actually a soothing dandruff eliminator too. Try this recipe for fast results:

Mix 2 cups of Chamomile tea with half a cup of lemon juice

Saturate your hair with the mixture, tie back and leave to do it’s work for at least 30 minutes

For speedy brightening results, soak up some sun while you’re waiting

Rinse thoroughly and style as usual

Repeat with each hair wash until you have reached your desired colour

Perfect for light brown hair and up. Expect beautiful golden locks – brassy tone free!
