Hairstyle Tutorials For Short & Medium Length Hair

Enjoying a great hairstyle is not only reserved for those with long hair to play with, you can also create some really beautiful looks with short and medium length hair.

Here are a couple of our favourite easy-to-do hairstyle tutorials for our Tabitha James Kraan-ites out there.

Mini Beehive

We all love a bit of vintage now and then, and this hairstyle, as seen on ‘How-To Hair Girl’ falls right into that glorious 1960s ‘Mad Men’ category. Tousled and sexy with just the right amount of volume, but still perfect office wear – and better yet, it’ll only take you 5 minutes to put together!

What You’ll Need

  • A handful of Kirby Grips
  • 1 x back comb

Get The Look

  1. Start with day old hair, if possible. For gorgeous texture and added hold, use a light dusting of our Tabitha James Kraan Dry Shampoo and brush through.
  2. Lift up a section of hair on top of your head, from your front hair line to your crown. You should be left with a semi-circle parting at the back. Hold up vertically and using your back comb, slowly and deliberately begin creating volume at the back of this section by combing down the hair. There’s no need to do this rough and fast – for a sturdier hold and a nice, full beehive effect, do this slowly from mid length down to the root. Ideally you will want this section to be able to stand up on it’s own!
  3. Bring this top section back down, smooth and twist the ends. Push the base of this twist in and up into your newly created mini beehive and secure with a grip.
  4. Gather the loose hair together, twist and wrap into a small bun that sits directly under the beehive. Secure discretely with grips, pushing them into the beehive to keep them well hidden.

Chain Braid Buns

Braids always help to make any hairstyle exciting and a chain braid is an awesome alternative to your regular sort. We loved this this hairstyle on ‘A Beautiful Mess’, which works best on hair without layers but can be worn on all hair lengths. A playful look for everyday wear!

What You’ll Need

  • A Brush and/or comb
  • A handful of Kirby Grips
  • 2 x clear elastics

Get The Look

  1. Choose your parting (this hairstyle looks great with both middle and side) and brush out tangles. Use a pump or two of our 4-in-1 Citrus Conditioner to smooth fly-aways for a smooth finish.
  2. Pick out a small section of hair at the front on one side of your parting, as if you were going to do a standard braid. Divide this section into two and tie a knot (like the first step of tying your shoelaces!)
  3. Pick up small sections of hair on each side of your divided section and add to your strands as you would in a French plait and tie in a knot again. Repeat these steps until you get just behind your ear and then secure into place with a couple of grips.
  4. Now you will be left with the rest of your hair on this side in a pigtail. Secure with a band and leave as it is, or turn this into a bun by twisting and securing.
  5. Repeat on the opposite side.
